DOH Bicol: Be a Responsible Pet Owner

Press Release, March 10, 2020

The month of March is celebrated as Rabies Awareness Month (RAM) every year as decreed by a presidential executive order. In line with this, the Department of Health Center for Health Development – Bicol calls on all Bicolanos especially pet owners to help eliminate, if not, decrease rabies cases in the Region.

Rabies is a human infection that occurs after a transdermal bite or scratch by an infected animal, like dogs and cats. It can be transmitted when infectious material, usually saliva, comes into direct contact with a victim’s fresh skin lesions.

Rabies is considered to be a neglected disease, which is 100% fatal though 100% preventable. It is not among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the country but it is regarded as a significant public health problem because (1) it is one of the most acutely fatal infection and (2) it is responsible for the death of 200-300 Filipinos annually.

For Bicol Region, there is a 145% increase of Rabies Cases recorded from 2018 (11 cases) to 2019 (27 cases). A total of twenty-seven (27) Rabies Cases recorded for the whole year of 2019 – ten (10) cases are from Camarines Sur, nine (9) in Albay, four (4) in Camarines Norte, four (4) in Sorsogon, and zero (0) in both Catanduanes and Masbate.
